Abstract

Water-soluble Chitosans, CsMa, were prepared by grafting maleic acid on an amino group of chitosan, and identified the structure of grafted chitosan using H-NMR and FT-IR. The chitosan derivatives were used to improve the solubility of chitosan in water. The deacetylation degree of the chitosan was 99.3%. The viscosity-average molecular weights were 6.72 ¡¿ 10, 1.27 ¡¿ 10, respectively. The antibacterial effects with the concentration of CsMa for Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pyogenes, and Escherichia coli were 93% at 500 ppm, 94.6% at 300 ppm, and 93% at 300ppm, respectively. The Antimicrobial effect at 300 ppm of CsMa concentration was 100% for Staphylococcus aureus, 98.3% for Streptococcus pyogenes, and 96.7% for Escherichia coli.; 100% at 500 ppm for three kinds of mentioned above.
